GKJ Margoyudan was established on April 30, 1916, originating from a Christian spiritual community that developed in a workshop owned by a Dutchman named Stegerhoek. In 1909, Dr. D. Bakker Sr. founded a Christian school, which later became a place for worship and education. Inspired by the success of the Javanese Christian community in Yogyakarta, which established Petronela Hospital in 1897, the Surakarta Zending built Zending Hospital in 1912. As the congregation grew, Reverend Dr. H.A. van Andel initiated the construction of a church with a capacity of 400 people on the site of Stegerhoek's workshop, officially inaugurated in 1921. GKJ Margoyudan's presence later inspired the growth of Javanese Christian communities in Surakarta and surrounding areas such as Sragen, Wonogiri, Delanggu, Kartasura, and Karanganyar.
